Urdaibai 1
We start our tour taking BI 635 road up to the village of Gernika-Lumo. There are regular and frequent Bizkaibus and Euskotren which link the village with Bilbao. From there, our first stop will be the Euskal Herria Museum, which is situated next to the Assembly Hall and has a garden and a parking at the rear of the building.
The Museo Euskal Herria is the best window to display and explain the history, customs, religiosity, myths, arts, sports, gastronomy, and millenary language of Basque people through a rich heritage that includes works of art of recognized authors (such as Sert, Arrue, Guinea, Barroeta, Guiard) and miniatures, together with a modern and participative museography with audiovisual and multimedia materials. All this is wrapped in a peaceful atmosphere given by the park. This is a perfect place to go for a walk or rest.
After this first visit, we will enter in the Museum of Peace, located in Fueros square, that we can easily reach on foot. This space has been extended and transformed into an attractive and dynamic museum that from information related to the bombing of the village, digs into the idea of peace. A museum made to feel and to live.
A well-deserved lunch in one of the fine restaurants of the village will approach us to the wide range of choices offered by local gastronomy, which is excellent and includes two appellations of origin: beans and peppers.
Then, driving towards the beaches until the roundabout, we will take road BI 2238. Before arriving to the centre of Kortezubi (at about km 2.2 from Gernika), we will take BI 4244, a very pronounced deviation on the right hand with a sign post indicating Caves of Santimamiñe. Continue until the parking. The cave is situated, in the exit of a valley and natural hunting ground. Once there, we will be able to admire the last archaeological excavations. Afterwards, there is the possibility to go through all the cave by means of a virtual 3D replica thanks to which we will learn about the formation and morphology of the cave and admire its prehistoric art.
