Bilbao Fine Arts Museum

The origins of the present gallery date back to the Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1908 and opened to the public in 1914, and the Museum of Modern Art, opened in 1924. The two institutions and their respective collections effectively merged in 1945, when the original museum building was erected. A modern extension was added in 1970, and major removation was carried out in 2001, giving the museum its current appearance.

The museum collection contains over ten thousand items, including paintings, sculptures, works on paper and applied arts, covering the period from the thirteenth century to the present. There are important examples of ancient, modern and contemporary art. Of particular interest are the paintings from the Spanish and Flemish schools as well as a large collection of works by Basque artists.
