Gernika Peace Museum Foundation

The Gernika Peace Museum opened on 8 January, 2003. Is a theme-based museum devoted to the culture of peace. It takes its inspiration from the tragic bombing of Gernika on 26 April, 1937. The permanent exhibition centres around three essential themes or questions:

1.- What is peace?
A wide range of ideas, concepts, thoughts and perspectives on the subject of peace, with particular emphasis on the contemporary idea that peace, with the aim of resolving conflict, springs from relations between people. The history of peace should not be viewed merely as the history of the end of conflicts.

2.-What legacy has the bombing of Gernika left?
A reading of the history of Gernika-Lumo and the Spanish Civil War, the bombing and the exemplary lesson offered by the survivors of that tragic event, entering into reconciliation with their aggressors, as well as other reconciliation and mediation processes from around the world.

3.- What is currently happening with peace in the world?
A look at the world through the lens of Picasso s "Guernica", with a deliberation on human rights and the Basque conflict as ways of examining the current state of peace around the world.
