We begin our trip in the Archaeological Museum, located in the old railway station that linked Bilbao with Asua valley. The museum, that is also a research centre about Biscay s past, offers to the visitor the possibility of travelling in time following the steps of its inhabitants, from the tools that were used by the first settlers in Barrika more than 200,000 years ago, to the silverware that was used by the friars of the Convent of San José del Desierto in Sestao, about 150 years ago.
Going down the old pavements of Mallona, that once were part of the royal path and today are part of the Camino de Santiago, we get to the Basque Museum. The museum is located inside an historical building, the College of the Jesuits, which has a splendid cloisters with the Idol of Mikeldi, a zoomorph sculpture dating from the IVth century BC. In the museum, that aims to conserve and diffuse the materials and documents that witness the lifestyles of the Basques, we can discover objects related to traditional crafts, as well as admire a "bird s eye view" of Biscay thanks to its huge miniature of 18 meters of length by 11 meters of width.
We leave the museum by Cruz street and, after passing through the Portal of Zamudio, one of the gates of the medieval enclosure, we get to the Church of Santiago, the oldest of Bilbao, erected before the foundation of the village and rebuilt in Gothic style during the XVth century. from there, we will take Torre street to get to the Stock Exchange Palace, where we can still see remains from the wall. After having a meal in one of the many restaurants present in the area, we will cross the pedestrian bridge of La Ribera to get to the Museum of Artistic Reproductions.
Museum of Artistic Reproductions is one of the best of Europe in his kind for the selection and quality of the exhibited reproductions, such as the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the Venus of Milo and the Moses of Michelangelo.
