Lea Artibai
We begin our trip in the village of Markina, where we will take BI 633 road. However, if we come rom Bilbao by Durango and the port of Trabakua, we do not need to get all the way to Markina, since we can exit BI 633 in Iruzubieta crossroad and take BI 2224 towards Bolibar, which we will pass through to get to Gerrikaitz. Just before a sharp curve we will find the entrance of the Renewable Energies Centre of Bengola located on the banks of Lea river. The centre not only displays the origins and importance of renewable energies, but it is also an essential space to get to know and interpret the region of Lea Ibarra, which has remains of the oldest foundry documented in Biscay.
From Munitibar we will go down road BI 2224 until the village of Bolibar, in the municipality of Ziortza Bolibar. Here is the Simón Bolívar Museum, in a building known as Errementarikua farm, whose land is related to Simón Bolívar s ancestors and that shows the personal and politic development of Simón Bolívar, the Libertador.
After leaving the village by BI 2224, we will take BI 633 and go through the neighbourhood of Iruzubieta to get to Markina. The establishments of this locality, that offer traditional cuisine made with local products, are an excellent place to eat.
The afternoon, we will leave Markina by BI 633 road, which links the village with the port of Ondarroa. Just before arriving to Barriatua, in Plazakola crossroad, we will turn left taking BI 2405 and, after round 15 minutes, we will get to the village of Lekeitio. We will cross the town to get to Santa Catalina lighthouse, a beautiful maritime site that houses an interpretation centre thanks to which we will learn about navigation techniques and sail on a virtual boat finding surprises on our journey and feeling the joy of reaching port. In addition to that, Lekeitio s Santa Catalina lighthouse is also the only lighthouse in Euskadi that can currently be visited. At the exit, we will enjoy breathtaking views over Basque coast.
