Itsasmuseum Bilbao

Itsasmuseum Bilbao (Maritime Museum)

Itsasmuseum Bilbao tells the story of the maritime culture of Bilbao and Bizkaia and the close links between the local people and the sea, which has helped give them traditions and an identity which are unique. Itsasmuseum works to conserve and publicise the maritime heritage of Bilbao and Bizkaia from a participative, educational viewpoint for both locals and visitors from further afield. It stands on the site once occupied by the wharves of the former Euskalduna shipyard on the Paseo de Abandoibarra promenade near the Guggenheim Museum and the Palacio Euskalduna concert hall and convention centre.

Itsasmuseum has a surface area of around 27,000 m2, partly interior and partly exterior. The exterior area features wharves with more than 150 years of history behind them, where some of the vessels in the museum’s collection are now located, along with exhibits such as a famous crane known as Carola, the Pump House and a number of sculptures. This is an ideal recreational space which comes into its own as a hub for maritime leisure-related activities.

The indoor area measures around 7,000 m2. It houses temporary and permanent exhibitions. Stand-out features of the permanent exhibition include a collection of scale models, audio-visual presentations and life-sized recreations. Since 2018the area has incorporated two new projects: ERAIN, a knowledge hub for 20th century boat-building techniques in Bizkaia, and the Port Center, a project which looks at the operations and importance of the Port of Bilbao today.
