The principal aim of this exhibition — a study of the monuments erected in memory of the victims of the spanish Civil War since the late 1930s to the present day — is to show the evolution of their place in the Basque public space.
Whilst victims on the Franco side were thrust into omnipresence until the end of the 1970s, the memory of those fallen on the Republican side has gone in the other direction, journeying from the depths of obscurity to which they were condemned under the dictatorship to being undeniably present in our time.
This exhibition does not seek to place all victims in the same category, nor to equate the repression exercised during the conflict by one or other side. Several historical projects have illustrated the profound differences handed down from its origins and aims through to the nature of the practices used.
The exhibition’s chief goal is to underscore the to-and-fro of memory, and to analyse the prominent role of monuments in reactivating memory and in the social recognition of the Republican victims over the last decade.
