Las Encartaciones Museum

This is most iconic building in the Encartaciones area. Originally created as an Assembly Hall, it was the centre of political government in the region for centuries. Today it houses a museum and is a cultural reference point for the region.

The most recent of many restorations was completed in 1989, when a new modern block was added in front of the tower and the interior of the assembly hall and the house of the Corregidor were refurbished.

The Las Encartaciones museum opened in 1994. Owned by the Provincial Assemblies of Bizkaia, it contains eight rooms showing the history of the area from prehistoric times to the nineteenth century.

Its primary functions are to publicise the history, heritage and art of the Las Encartaciones area:

  • Research into local culture.
  • Staging of exhibitions on the culture of Las Encartaciones and the province of Bizkaia.
  • Publication of historical and artistic studies.
  • Educational activities to show pupils the different cultural aspects of the world of Las Encartaciones.
  • Other cultural activities: lectures, tours, collaboration with institutions and individuals, etc.
