Plasentia Butrón Museum

This museum was opened in January 1999 by the Plasentia de Butrón Foundation. Its purpose is to restore and exhibit a range of items from the history of Plentzia and surroundings. The museum ranges over two floors. Model ships show the way designs have developed over the ages. The oldest is a fifteenth century nao. This type of ship was replaced by the galleon, which combined the functions of cargo ship and warship – an important advantage on the high seas in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. With the eighteenth century, new types of ships emerged, such as the frigate, the schooner, the brig, etc. Later, in the nineteenth century, came the speedy clippers. By the end of the century, steam had begun to replace sail. The last section covers the twentieth century with its merchant vessels, passenger ferries and oil tankers. Some of the models on show were originally made as votive offerings, and would normally have been hung from church ceilings. Some of the paintings of ships were intended for the same purpose, which explains the storm scenes they so often depict. Others were meant as a memento, in some cases painted by a crew member.
